Information for future re-applicants
Let's explore why your application did not proceed to the next stage and where you can improve.
Did not recieve an interview invitation?
(1) Did you meet the minimum academic requirements?
The minimum academic requirements (e.g. GPA, prerequisites, etc.) are non-negotiables. If you do not meet the criteria, your application will not advance to the next stage and you will automatically recieve a declined offer.
(2) Did you submit a complete application?
Applying to any medical school requires you to fill out, upload, and submit many documents. It is important that you ensure that the application you are submitting is fully completed. This includes your personal information, transcripts, academic and non-academic requirements, verifiers, and references.
(3) If you applied through the Indigenous Admission Streams, did you submit all required documentation?
In order to apply through the Indigenous admission streams, you are typically required to self-declare your Indigenous ancestry on OMSAS, submit proof of Indigenous ancestry, and submit a personal letter or statement to be considered for this stream. If you are missing any of these requirements, your application will not proceed to the next stage of review.
Recieved an interview invitation but not a final offer?
Each medical school may have a different interview format (vMPI, MMI, Talking Circles, etc.) and selection process.
It is important to review the school's admission website for information on their interviews and interview formats. Some schools provide information on what they are looking for (e.g. UofT values the four clusters of attributes and CanMEDS Roles). Make sure to place emphasis on these attributes during your interview when appropriate.
Practice, Review, and more practice!
While practicing with friends and family can be helpful, many universities offer interview prep or mock sessions hosted by current medical students or admission staff that will help by giving you valuable constructive feedback.
Additionally, these sessions will help you tackle interview questions by helping you frame your answers using effective methods (such as the S.T.A.R.R. method). Take advantage of these sessions as much as you can!
You should always review your answers and identify areas for improving the quality of your answers for the actual interview day.
